Question: “assalamu alikum sorry for disturbing you again but I had a question in mind what if someone cheated in exam and passed it and ended up finishing grade 12 after that can he, the person, repent and pay the kaffara or he can not use the certificate at all for higher studies and what ever he earn from that is not hallal.”
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. I strongly encourage such a person to repent to Allah, for cheating is one of the greatest sins. Allah’s Prophet (SAWS) said, “Whoever cheats us is not from us.” In addition, cheating is deemed a major sin which requires a person to make a specific repentance for.
Cheating in an exam is no different. It is impermissible by the unanimous consensus of the Islamic Scholars and considered immoral by all cultures and people.
To answer your question: There is no particular expiation for a person who cheats except the fact that he is required to repent sincerely to Allah for that act of disobedience. If this person who had cheated is CURRENTLY FULLY CAPABLE of handling the studies or work which he will commence based on the merit of the certificate which he acquired with some cheating, he is permitted to commence that assignment. However, if he is not capable of performing well in either the job or his studies, he is not permitted to take on these tasks on the merit of the certificate during which he had cheated.
And Allah knows best.
